Alex Tsui
Senior Tutor
Alex is a PhD scholar in biochemistry based at the University of Oxford. He is passionate in teaching sciences and maths for high school and university students. With over 10 years of tutoring experience, Alex has tutored students studying various syllabi in Hong Kong and in the UK.
He is now our Senior Tutor
who helps with :
Educational Background
-
Master of Science (Biology - Structural Biology & Biophysics) - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich
-
Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry) - University College London (UCL)
General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE A - Level )
- Chemistry (A*), Biology (A*), Maths & Further Maths (A*)
He is now in a 5-year joint doctoral programme between the UK (Oxford) and California (Scripps), where he will spend equal times in two places. Here he is using a combined structural and computational techniques to understand how specific sensory proteins in our bodies work, for example including the pain receptor and sour taste receptor.
Teaching Approach and Experience
He tends to use an exam-focused approach and I emphasise on familiarising the students with the exam syllabus, in a way they can understand clearly what they need to learn, and what are the “useful materials”. Building on this I supplement motivated students with extra materials that boost their understanding, sometimes from university texts.

He has been a private tutor since he was in high school (2010). Over the years, he has tutored over 30 students in my spare time, specialising in chemistry, biology and mathematics. He is very used to explaining the same concept in different levels of complexity, tailored to the specific level or interest of the students. At Oxford University, he taught biochemistry undergraduate students in the principles of mathematics and statistics.
